We are hiring an Application Software Engineer position in our Commercial HVAC Sustaining Engineering team in St. Paul, MN/White Bear Lake. This position will be focused on troubleshooting and fixing embedded software and cybersecurity applications for HVAC unit controls and building automation system controls. The role will be responsible for developing structured, verified software to meet customer needs. You will work closely partnering with other software, hardware, control algorithm and, project engineers as wells as with our technical support, development and product teams


  • Design and code software/firmware solutions across hardware and software platforms to address product quality issues and meet functional requirements.

  • Setup and perform development testing to verify product functionality.

  • Document code functionality.

  • Estimate timing for software development fixes/improvements and report on progress to meet customer needs.

  • Investigate embedded software problems on Trane controls products and provide troubleshooting directions to Technical Support & Sustaining Engineering teams to gather the required field information.

  • Keep current with latest embedded knowledge and skills for a broad range of Trane controls products.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, engineering technology or equivalent from a four-year college or university preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 1-3+ years of experience in microcomputer software design for embedded controls required.

  • Object Oriented analysis, design, and programming.

  • Linux experience.

  • Solid software application & hardware troubleshooting skills.

  • HVAC equipment controls and system knowledge a plus.

  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to function on a team, flexibility to take on varied software assignments.

This role has been designated as Hybrid – Flex for your day . While most work must be done on-site, there is flexibility to work remotely when workflow and priorities allow. ​
